It’s been more than 20 years since the amendment was defeated in the Florida Senate, leaving ERA backers just three states short of passage.
But the woman who sponsored the bill back in the 70’s and 80’s says they should try again this year.
“We really believe that there’s a possibility that we can ratify, that we can get the three more states to ratify the equal rights amendment and we can prevail in court, and
certainly see this task done,” says Sen. Gwen Margolis, (D) Miami.
“All I’m asking for is a fair hearing. Let us be heard! I said I’m a big girl and I can handle a defeat if you all vote it down, so be it, but let us be heard!” adds Rep. Arthenia Joyner (D) Tampa.
Nineteen Florida lawmakers have signed on as co-sponsors of the ERA, but that’s nowhere near enough to get the amendment approved.
