KidCare Funding Gets Cut Drastically in New Budget

Gov. Jeb Bush earlier this year proposed a $185 million cut.

Republicans argue the slots were going unused, but the Democrats say they’re not asking the right questions, especially at a time when Florida has a record budget surplus.

Rep. Chris Smith, (D) Fort. Lauderdale, says, “We think we should have the money in KidCare, and if anything, while we have extra money, use that money to go out and attract more people into KidCare because we truly need health insurance for our kids."

The KidCare program just began a $1.6 million outreach campaign to let people know about the low-cost health insurance and make sure they know enrollment periods were eliminated.
