The state House of Representatives approved a bill Wednesday that allows state ands local government to conduct secret negotiations when they try to lure new companies to Florida.
The Speaker of the House says there are times when the public’s right to know takes a back seat to the needs of business.
House Speaker Allan Bense says, “Well, you know, if I’m a company and I’m contemplating relocating to Florida and I’m currently located in Michigan or wherever, I’m not sure I would want the fact that I’m trying to expend be spread all over every newspaper in Florida or in the U.S., so I think there has to be a certain degree of confidentiality in there."
The business bill was just one of more than a dozen measures approved by the House of Representatives Wednesday that would allow exceptions to the rule of government in the sunshine.
