Homeland Security Chief in Tallahassee

Among the major concerns, a 70-year-old dike at Lake Okeechobee, and the fear it is a grave and imminent threat to the people and environment of south Florida.

Governor Bush is telling Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff they need to get fast action by the army corps of engineers to deal with the situation.

If the dike were to collapse during a hurricane, 40,000 people would have to be evacuated and damages could exceed $10 billion.
