Students of the Steele-Collins Charter School in Tallahassee have reason to be proud. Celebrating ten years since its founding, Steele-Collins is designated an 'A' school. But school officials aren't shy about expressing the need for financial support.
Local education officials say students who would not have performed as well in a traditional school setting often perform much better in charter schools.
During this national charter school week, focus is being placed on the need for these schools. These schools are private entities with their own governing boards but are sponsored by their respective school district.
Currently, Florida has 334 charter schools with about 50 in Georgia. Cramer says officials with the Leon County School System are planning to open two additional charter schools by August.
