A local organization is "Echo-ing" the call, helping some of those families find a decent place to live.
Echo Ministries has answered the call to help low-income families find an affordable place to live right here in Tallahassee, and they're doing it with the help of county and city officials.
Peter Counterman has been showing off the newly refurbished units fully equipped with all the amenities at Bethany Apartments on South Meridian Road.
Counterman, who is the executive director of Echo Ministries, decided to spruce up the facilities for low-income families who are looking for an affordable place to live.
Peter Counterman says, "There is a very strong need in the Tallahassee area for affordable housing. The mayor's task force on homelessness pointed that in their report."
So Echo Ministries took action and asked the county and city to help them refurbish the seven units for low-income families.
City and county officials provided $26,000 each for the project and were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Mayor John Marks says, "It's necessary for all the segments of our community, not only the city and the county, but the private sector as well to take a look at the issues relating to homelessness as well as affordable housing."
County Commissioner Bill Proctor adds, "We are truly reaching out to those who are in need of assistance for the county to come and support Echo Ministries. In this case we put our money where our hearts are."
It’s all in an effort to provide Tallahassee residents with a safe place to call home as they climb their way to a new beginning.
The apartments aren't free. Those who qualify will pay $590.00 a month as well as a $300 security deposit plus a $35 application fee.
