A wonderful start to the weekend for one of our area school teachers.
Suwannee Middle School seventh grade teacher Melissa Brinson got quite a surprise Friday morning. She has been chosen as one of five state finalists for the 2007 Florida Department of Education-Macy's Teacher of the Year.
Brinson has served in Suwannee County as a kindergarten, home economics, and now science teacher.
Melissa Brinson said, "Probably the most fun thing for me during these 25 years is that the high schoolers I started out teaching. I got to teach their small children when I taught kindergarten. I got to re-teach some of those kindergarten students right here at Suwannee Middle School. So it's been a lifelong relationship with many of my students."
Macy's presents each finalist with $5,000, and each school gets $1,000. The teacher of the year will be announced July 12 at Universal Studios.
