Dog Bite Prevention Week is set in the month of May before the summer begins.

The U.S. Postal Service and the Leon County Animal Control are holding programs at some schools this week to inform students of the potential dangers of dogs.

"One tip is to avoid dogs that are running stray. You want to leave them alone. Don't reach out and grab them. Another tip is to, if you want to pet a dog that's being walked by their owner, ask permission first," advises the Leon County Animal Control director, Richard Ziegler.

Ziegler says when you ask for permission to pet a dog, the owner will usually let you know whether that's a good idea or not. He says owners generally know their dog's personality.
