Groups Upset Over Downlisting of Manatees, Eagles

They also want to remove the eagle from the protection list entirely, but officials with 17 different environmental and animal rights groups claim the state is using a flawed system and needs to hold off on any changes.

Gov. Jeb Bush says it’s actually a sign that manatees and eagles are on the comeback.

Gov. Jeb Bush said, “These should be grounds for celebration. Instead, it brings out opponents. I don’t know why people who spend their careers advocating policies that yield a positive result don’t then celebrate. It’s just kind of odd.”

Environmental groups say the changes proposed by the Wildlife Commission could threaten a variety of animals that are already at risk, including the manatee, the Florida panther, and the Florida black bear.
