Tallahassee City Manager Anita Favors Thompson today announced that Jay L. Townsend, an Army veteran with strong experience in city government and private enterprise and current City Administrator for the city of Hayden, Idaho, will be the City’s newest Assistant City Manager. Townsend is expected to begin work in mid-December.
Following an interview process that involved both city employees and business / community representatives, Thompson chose Townsend.
“We had a great pool of candidates,” said Favors Thompson. “Jay Townsend brings a wealth of experience to the City of Tallahassee as a city administrator in two jurisdictions, his 9 years of experience with the U. S. Army and his work as an organizational management consultant and program manager. His years of management and leadership experience are great fits for the City of Tallahassee. We are delighted to welcome him to one of the finest city governments in the nation and to the wonderful community of Tallahassee.”
In his new assignment, Townsend will be responsible for the following departments: Police, Fire, Economic and Community Development, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs and Emergency Management, and Solid Waste.
Townsend reports directly to the City Manager and is a member of the city’s Executive Team. Townsend will be responsible for a total staff of approximately 1,084 and an annual budget of $130,000,000.
A native of Idaho, Townsend earned an Associate of Arts Degree from New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., in 1988, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from University of Idaho in 1990 and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University in 2000.
