It's estimated that some ten million baby boomers are expected to develop Alzheimer's in their lifetime. But there's one local facility that offers support to everyone affected by the disease.
"I can't be 80 years old! Haha I don't feel like I'm that old!" Valdosta resident Bill Ervin suffers from Alzheimer's Disease..but he's found a place that's a little hard to forget.
"When he's here, he's got different activities he can do that helps with his mind, keeps his mind alert," said Laura Pitts, daughter of an Alzheimer's patient.
Each year about 100 Alzheimer's patients are brought to "My Friend's House" in Valdosta.
Here, families get the support they need...free of charge. "They see the need, they see the importance of loved ones like my dad who need that special care. Because I can't leave him at home by himself and so someone is always here just to care for him," said Pitts.
Here, patients do what they like. Some sing, some dance, and some even sleep!
"It's just a blessing to have what I call Day Care," said Rhudene Morgan. A day care that brings peace to the patients...
...and a peace of mind to their loved ones. "Just those special moments just go so long even though they may not remember it, it just makes them happy for that moment and that means so much," said Pitts.
There is no cure for Alzheimer's. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the US.
Saturday, November 1st, the Alzheimer's Association will be holding a Memory Walk in Valdosta.
Location: Valdosta Middle School
Registration Begins: 9:00am
Walk Festivities Start: 10:00am
