DCF Employee and Daughter Arrested

Two women are behind bars. The mother-daughter duo is accused of duping the state of Florida out of thousands.

Investigators say they deceived the very agency for which one of the women worked. Florida Department of Children and Families employee Debra Green Brooks is arrested and charged with public assistance fraud.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says while working at the Madison County DCF Service Center, she helped her daughter, 30-year-old Tranicia Green, file false claims with DCF.

Debbie Brooks, DCF Spokesperson, District 2, said, "She was an employee who was entrusted with confidential information and access to systems that the department uses to make people eligible for food stamps. The investigation centered [on] her misuse of that authority."

FDLE says the daughter, Green, has gotten almost $14,000 in benefits since 2001 by claiming her two daughters were living with her when they were not.

Phil Kiracofe, FDLE Spokesperson, said, "She was claiming the need for benefits for food stamps, for Medicaid services, and some cash assistance. She received all three with a total amount of $13,800."

A spokesperson for DCF says Brooks has been a longtime employee for years and her file does not indicate any misconduct in her past. Brooks was arrested Tuesday afternoon at work at her Madison County DCF office, but she is in the Jefferson County Jail, where the charges were actually filed.

Green was already in the Leon County Jail on unrelated charges when she was charged Tuesday with the fraud charges. FDLE says information from a source prompted the investigation about a month ago.
