Former Florida Senate President Turns Himself In

W. D. Childers reported to the Escambia County Jail Monday surrounded by family and friends, some of whom cried when he surrendered to begin serving a three-and-a-half-year term.

Childers was expected to be transferred later in the day to the state facility at Lake Butler. His conviction stems from his service as an Escambia County commissioner.

Childers was convicted of bribing another Escambia commissioner, Willie Junior, to vote for the purchase of a defunct soccer complex in 2001.

Junior was facing a series of corruption charges, but committed suicide before his sentencing.
