State officials gathered at the Capitol to complete the purchase of the Babcock Ranch in southwest Florida.
The Division of Lands' director says the state now owns 74 thousand acres of the ranch in Lee and Charlotte counties.
“Preserving land for us and the children and the people behind us to come play and recreate on," said Eva Armstrong. "And with this one, we get it all. Every type of recreation you could possibly want plus we get to preserve a working ranch for future generations to see what ranching is all about.”
The state legislature contributed $310 million for the purchase and the Lee County Commission chipped in 40 million more.
Environmentalists praise the deal, saying it provides a habitat for wildlife while protecting a valuable water recharge area.
