Child Abuse Death Case Ends in Plea

8-21-06 - A Tallahassee man poised to go to trial on deadly child abuse charges this week has opted for a last minute plea.

Twenty-five-year-old Maning Lott was accused of aggravated child abuse in the death of his two-and-a-half-month-old daughter, Shalia.

According to court records, he told police he was playing with his daughter, tossing her in the air and accidentally dropped her. She died of massive head injuries the next day.

Lott could have faced 30 years in prison if he'd been convicted at trial. This morning's plea deal will send him to prison for 10 years instead.
