Officials with Florida A&M University are already making preparations for the formal announcement next week that FAMU is number one, according to Black Enterprise Magazine.

"I think that it is great FAMU is thought of as number one for black students. It means a lot to me as a transfer student, coming here and knowing that I am in good hands," said FAMU sophomore Audrey Lavette-Kennedy.

Black Enterprise has announced its list of the top 50 colleges for African Americans.

FAMU heads the pack, beating out Howard University, North Carolina A&T, Harvard University and Spelman at in the top five spots. Florida State University comes in at 25.

The rankings are based on a survey of 500 African American higher education professionals. The rankings reflect student enrollment, graduation rates and the school's social environment.

"It is good when you can get the recognition that you deserve. Besides being the college of the year in 1997, it's good see FAMU do good in other areas," said FAMU senior Brandon Edmonds.

"Many times, media outlets choose to report on the negatives, as we all know. It sells papers and gets viewers, but in actuality, our university is on the up and we're working hard to ensure our motto, 'excellence with caring,'" said FAMU student body president Phillip Agnew.

Officials from Black Enterprise Magazine will make a formal announcement Monday on FAMU's campus. FAMU is coming up on the 10 year anniversary of being named college of the year by the Princeton Review.
