Major Steps Towards Joint Dispatch

Leon County's Public Safety Communications Board is making giant strides towards a merged 9-1-1 dispatch center. Tallahassee, Leon County and the Sheriff's Office formally established a relationship to get the dispatch center rolling.

The board is also starting the process to purchase a new communications system. It will start the worldwide bidding process soon. Board members say the new communications system will eliminate current dead spots and should be operational within a year or two after an equipment company is selected.

Parwez Alam, Leon County Administrator and Chairman of the Public Safety Communications Board, said, "If it's a law enforcement call, the nearest deputy officer would be able to respond to it. We would all be communicating with each other. Deputies, the police officers, they will be talking to each other. The EMS, the fire will be on the same frequency."

The board will select a consultant in the next couple of weeks to study how to best merge the current systems.
