Wayne Nesmith, mayor of Meigs, Georgia since 1972, passed away shortly before midnight Wednesday night.
Nesmith was taken to the hospital last Sunday with a high count of ammonia in his bloodstream, and died of pneumonia-related complications.
He was 61 years old.
While in office, mayor Nesmith oversaw natural gas and a new sewage system being brought into Meigs, and received grants for new water wells throughout the town.
His friends and co-workers say he will be greatly missed.
