TAMPA, Fla. (AP) --
In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture of him smoking marijuana published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.
Phelps said: "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

Phelps started swimming to compete and eventually set his sight on the Olympics. He was drug free during his Olympic experience and his behavior during the Olympics was stellar. The fact that in the privacy of a party some nimrod snapped a photo of him smoking marijuana stinks, but he is human and it doesn't change who he is or the quality of his character. He was a young man who had showed restraint for months or years of competition where he was subject to drug testing and never tested positive (from the search I did earlier) and he had a weak moment, give me a break!

I'm surprised by the number of people defending Phelps' idiocy. The guy broke the law--and it appears to be a pattern (he was busted for DUI a few years ago). Some are saying this is okay because he's young. Others are saying it's okay because a lot of people do it. Another group says it's okay because it's "just" pot. These are completely ineffective arguments, though, and don't at all justify his behavior.
