Online Learning Grows in Popularity

FAMU sophomore Charles Blair takes classes on campus, and also holds down a job, to help with his busy schedule he's gone online for certain courses. Blair is one of millions making this decision.

A government study shows between 1997 and 2000 distance learning courses more than doubled from $1.3 million to $2.9 million.

“So many people are opting because of busy schedules, big job to keep those things going,” says Joseph Roach, FAMU Distance Learning Director.

FSU Online Director Larry Dennis agrees saying the demand creates quite a challenge for faculty.

“At FSU we have web enhanced courses, combined, growing very rapidly,” Dennis explains.

About 32,000 enroll in online and or web enhanced courses, with a completion rate of 94-percent.

FAMU has around 8,500 students taking online courses, and reports an estimated 90-percent completion rate.
