Ohio Congressman Suggests Limiting Apalachicola River Traffic

Rep. David Hobson is a Republican from Ohio. He toured the river Wednesday along with a representative from Florida, Allen Boyd, a Democrat from Monticello. Boyd's district includes the river in Florida's Panhandle.

Hobson suggests limiting barge traffic on the Florida Panhandle river to certain times of the year to help prevent environmental damage caused by dredging.

A biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says that barge traffic could be limited to high water periods between December and May, when there's no need to manipulate the river's depth and flow.

Sen. Bob Graham and Rep. Boyd have been pushing to end commercial navigation in the Apalachicola cut off dredging funds.

Barge traffic has declined dramatically over the past decade with only about 35 barges using the river every year.
