Tallahassee is rebuilding ties with its former sister city Krasnodar, Russia.

The relationship froze after the collapse of the Soviet Union, at least up until this summer when Krasnodar city leaders asked Tallahassee to reestablish the relationship.

Tallahassee Mayor John Marks will spend the next few days in the Russian city to lay out a plan on how the cities will once again share their cultural, educational and medical resources.

Doctors from Krasnodar trained at Tallahassee Memorial's Heart Institute in the 1980s, and with that training they were able to establish a Thoracic Center in Krasnodar.

It's just one tie leaders from both cities hope to rebuild.

Mayor Marks said, "Hopefully we'll come back with something a little more concrete than we have now, but these are the preliminary steps and you've got to take the preliminary steps before you get to the point where we have an exchange that will be beneficial to both Krasnodar and Tallahassee."

Tallahassee has sister city relationships with three other cities, Sligo, Ireland, Rahmat Hasharon, Israel, and St. Maarten in the Caribbean. Marks says two more sister-city relationships are on the horizon. He'll return to Tallahassee on Tuesday.
