Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg would not give the condition of trooper Richard S. Titus.
Authorities say he was standing in the east emergency lane on the northbound side of the road when he was hit by Apolinar Castillo Castro of Brownsville, Texas about 12:50 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
Castro was driving a Ford Ranger pickup and was towing a second truck. The patrol says that Castro attempted to change lanes but as he veered to the left, traffic in front of him slowed so he veered back to the right. That caused the two trucks to start spinning counterclockwise. Both hit the trooper.
Castro was not hurt. He's charged with careless driving, bad tires and not carrying proof of insurance.
