The Florida Legislature wants to cut state employee salaries.
All employees earning more than 45-thousand will have their paychecks cut by 2%.
The state is the largest employer in Leon County.
In all, nearly 21,000 people are state workers and contribute to the local economy.
The last time they received a pay raise was November 2006, and now 20% of them are taking a pay cut.
By all accounts, state employee Andy Janecek loves his job.
"I was hired to serve the citizens of Florida."
"I love the state."
"I'll be a state employee for as long as Florida allows me to be one."
Janecek has been a state employee for seven years....and now Florida is cutting his pay.
Florida lawmakers agreed to cut salaries over the weekend, hoping to save the state $30 million.
State employee Andy Janecek says, "It equates to maybe a day or two off a year. So I really don't see it hurting me that much."
Nearly 21,000 people are employed by the state in Leon County.
Under a new agreement in the legislature, around 4,000, or 20% of these workers will get a pay cut.
Other state workers we spoke to are just happy to have a job.
But not everyone thinks this is a game.
Doug Martin represents the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Doug Martin says, "It's going to be very very difficult for this state to recruit the qualified professionals it needs to carry out the work of the people."
Martin says the union will urge Governor Charlie Crist to veto this provision.
But Janecek is willing to deal with it.
"If that's my share to make life better for everyone, then I'm happy to do it," says Janecek.
Janecek did say that this pay cut may be more substantial to employees with families to feed....but he says, overall he and his coworkers haven't been talking about it too much.

Gary, my understanding is that if you're just over the cusp of $45k, you'll only be reduced to $45k, even if that ends up being less than 2%.
I hope State employee Andy Janacek isn't an accountant for the State. Two percent of 52 weeks pay comes out to slightly more than a week's pay cut, not a day or two.
2% is a drop in the bucket compared to the waste in state government. I was employed by the state for 14 years. I was acutally told to spend money on things we did not need so we would not have our budget cut the following year. I could tell you some stories.
