Southside to Get New School

In February the Leon County school board approved a $61 million package that included building a new school on the south side of town, but the question remains, where to put this new facility?

The ties that bond this school to the community date back generations. O.J. Dawson remembers his first years at Bond Elementary.

"I started Bond in the 1st grade now 61-years-old I'd like it to stay where it is, when I started it was a wooden building."

The Leon County School Board is moving forward with plans to build a new school on the south side of town, combining Wesson and Bond Elementary, but where to put this new school is the question. Some residents fear it will mean the end of their beloved school.

Building a new school on a new site, $13 million. Building a new school on the Bond site, $13 million. Loosing a piece of their history, priceless.

"What do they have to look forward to gone and part of their heritage destroyed," says Rick Davis.

A new school hasn't been built on the south side of town in 30 years. School leaders plan to hold a series of public hearings before deciding on a final location for the new school, and a site selection committee has been formed to help.
