The state is sponsoring a contest to redesign its manatee license plate. Artists are encouraged to submit their vision of the perfect design for a new manatee license tag.
The current plate is 13 years old. New technologies allow more creative designs for specialty plates.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has already received about 10 designs. A spokeswoman says the agency is hoping to receive many more entries.
Angie Raines of the wildlife commission says they're going to narrow it down to seven finalists and then let the public vote on the agency's website.
That vote probably won't happen until next spring.
The current manatee plate is the second most popular specialty tag in Florida. More than 500-thousand have been issued since 1990.
