The Moultrie Observer is reporting that Moultrie police shot and killed a local man Thursday evening at the Chevron convenience store on First Avenue Southeast around 7:30.
A female relative of the deceased, identified by bystanders as Willie Banks, collapsed at the sight of his blue cowboy hat on the pavement in front of the western door of the store.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Moultrie Police Department officers would not release any information on the investigation Thursday. An official account of the shooting is expected Friday.
An unofficial account of the shooting, pieced together from bystanders and witnesses, was that police were attempting to serve a warrant on Banks outside the store. Banks pulled a small knife, and police shot him twice in the chest.
