Lunchtime at Leon High is a thirty-minute power chow where kids have choices to make when it comes to their diet. And these days kids have more choices than ever, some good, and some bad.
"We're trying to get away from the fried foods, the pizza on a daily basis. Every food, as a dietician will tell you, there is no such thing as a bad food you just need to have them in moderation."
There may be no such thing as a bad food, but there are certainly some that are worse than others.
"Research shows that sodas are on of the main culprits adding extra calories to kids diets. Dieticians say there are better alternatives."
Of course as the old saying goes you can lead a kid to tomatoes, but you can't make them eat it.
"If we make a meal that is perfectly healthy and meets everything and the kids don't eat it, then we haven't accomplished anything. So were trying to find a balance of the healthy things they will eat so they have proper nutrition."
Also many school vending machines are now serving a healthier variety of snacks and drinks. If parents pack a lunch for their kids what should they watch out for? Pre-processed junk. Stick with cold cuts and fresh fruits, and maybe some yogurt.
