FAMU's Poverty Fighting Initiative

Last year, state and local leaders gathered at Florida A&M University to discuss the development of a federal commission. Monday that same group came back to find out their hard work has made it all the way to Capitol Hill.

At a second annual forum at Florida A&M University, community-based organizations are finding out their input regarding poverty in the south has headed to Washington, DC, meaning the concerns and solutions came straight from communities all across the south from Texas to Virginia.

If the legislation passes, a federal commission would be developed and could pump millions of dollars into education, health care, housing and economic development.

On the local level, FAMU coordinators say it's their job to keep the ball rolling. Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Madison, Suwannee and Taylor Counties are all listed as areas dealing with persistent poverty.
