Althea Gibson Dies

Tennis

A 1952 graduate of Florida A & M University, Gibson was the first black tennis player to compete in the U.S. Championships in 1950, and at Wimbledon, in 1951.

However, it wasn't until several years later that she began to win major tournaments, including Wimbledon in 1957 and U.S. Championships in 1958. She won the French open, and three doubles titles at Wimbledon from1956 to 58.

Venus Williams joined Gibson as only the second African-American woman to win Wimbledon. Gibson was 76 years old.
