Opening statements will begin Monday morning in the trial of a former Leon County Sheriff's Deputy accused of beating his wife.

Mark Thompson sat through jury selection on Friday with his lawyers. A total of 8 jurors were selected.

Thompson is accused of beating his wife in August of 2007 to the point that she had to be hospitalized.

Prosecutors say Thompson punched his wife, held a gun to her head, handcuffed her to the bed and beat her.

Thompson has been in jail for two years awaiting trial.

Those who leave messages of support are no better than Thompson. Aside from the terrible, unexcusable beating he gave his wife, who is at least 100 lbs smaller than him, I know this guy to be a racist, who would often brag about using a taser on n****** just to get a laugh. He also could go nowhere without 1) wearing a gun and 2) making sure everyone knew he had it; often pulling it out as a joke, even though he was drunk. I hope this guy gets life.

Hey, I bet anonymous is his mama. Only person that could actually believe his claims.

I also am stunned that this is not appearing in the Tallahassee Democrat. The editor at the TD did do a blog today patting himself on the back for publishing local mug shots. Yet nary a word on a criminal trial regarding a deputy sheriff. The Democrat should cover Thompson's trial and also re-print the photo of Sheriff Larry Campbell giving Thompson an award. Larry sure knows how to pick'em.
