Marietta Police said 41 year old Deputy Loren Lilly was killed in the collision, which occurred at about 5:45 am.

Police said Lilly was driving south on Powder Springs Road near Baltimore Place when his green Honda Civic collided with a white Ford Taurus and overturned several times. Officer Casey Camp said Lilly's car overturned several times and he was killed at the scene.

Authorities arrested two men later, saying they had fled on foot after the wreck. Police said the driver, 27 year old Joel Camacho Perea of Marietta, was charged with vehicular homicide, hit and run, failure to maintain his lane and driving without a license.

Casey said the passenger, 23 year old Maurilio Herrea, was charged with a misdemeanor count of falsely reporting a crime to police, saying the car they were in had been stolen.

Lilly, a Marietta resident, had worked for the sheriff's department since 1989. He was assigned to the jail division.
