A manhunt is on for a former Quincy police officer who drove a van smack into his estranged wife's home this morning (7-13).
47-year-old Ted Smith has been on the run for more than 16 hours and deputies believe he could be in another state by now.
There is a gaping hole in the back of the house where Ted Smith's estranged wife was sleeping when he drove a Ford Van through the wall of her bedroom just before two o'clock this morning.
Deputies say Kristi Smith is doing fine and is in a safe house, but they are concerned about Ted Smith's mental state.
Tread marks rip through the backyard of the house on Lake Laurie Circle.
They are marks that investigators say are evidence Ted Smith was aiming his van directly at his wife's bedroom.
They also say, after he crashed the van through the wall, he chased Kristi Smith through the house and attempted to strangle her. She was able to break free and call authorities. That's when deputies say Ted Smith took off in a Blue Ford Explorer.
"We don't know what his state of mind is. From the damage that he did, in the way that he did it, driving an automobile through a wall to gain entrance to a house to assault someone. We just don't know what his state of mind is right now and what he's capable of doing," said LT Jim Corder with the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office.
This isn't the couple's first domestic disturbance.
Kristi Smith filed a domestic violence injunction against Ted on April 27th and he was supposed to stay away from her.
A no-bond warrant is out for his arrest. If Smith is captured, he will be charged with felony criminal mischief, violation of an injunction and burglary with a battered victim.
Smith is a former Police Officer. He used to work for the Quincy Police Department, however he hasn't been employed there since the early nineties.
Deputies say there were two children inside the house when Smith drove into the home.
