Local High School Serves the Community

Residents are working hard to make sure needy members of the community have food on their tables on Thanksgiving. The Leon High Student Government Association has been collecting food for the needy at thanksgiving for more than 20 years. Students say this year may be their most successful one yet.

It's a busy time of year for members of the Leon High Student Government Association. They're planning the Thanksgiving dinners for thousands of other people besides themselves.

For more than 20 years, Leon High has worked hand-in-hand with the Second Harvest Food Bank to put food on the tables of needy families throughout a 14-county area.

"But a lot of the food you see will be going to Leon County families that are in need of food over Thanksgiving," says Andy Windsor.

Food bank volunteers say every year they try to get about a pound-and-a-half of food for each family they serve. This Thanksgiving they are especially in need of canned meat and vegetables. As soon as the food is brought in, most of it goes right back out the door to those in need. Volunteers say it's a lot of work, but the end result is definitely worth it.

The Second Harvest Food Bank serves more than 330 agencies. They say there's no way to tell exactly how many families they'll be helping, but it's definitely in the thousands.

You can drop food off at Second Harvest's warehouse. Call them at 562-3033 for more information.
