Today Marks 64th Anniversary of the World's First Atomic Bomb Attack, Local Vet Reflects
Hiroshima's Mayor is urging global leaders to back President Barack Obama's call to abolish nuclear weapons. But not everyone agrees with that stance. One local war veteran says people should not view nuclear weapons in a negative light.

This small box full of war medals is Edward Melane, 89, has left to remember of his 25 years serving in the Army.

He also has his vivid memories.

Particularly of the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, which happened 64 years ago.

"I was probably in the hospital at the time, I had been wounded in Europe," said Edward Melane, a retired Army captain. "I thought it was great. That ended the war for us."

Melane, who has an American Flag standing tall in his front yard year round, believes dropping an atom bomb was the best thing to happen during World War II.

Not only did "our boys" as Melane refers to them get to go home, but that meant no more bodies would be mangled by bullets.

Something Melane says he saw all too often in the hospital, just ask him about the man treated next to him in a London hospital.

"He was in a body cast from the knees up to the neck and they had him on water pumps cleaning his system and he just smelled to high heaven," Melane recalled.

Melane, who worked his way up from private to captain thinks most people misunderstand history and the need for the atom bomb.

"They think we did such a terrible thing but even though it wiped out a lot of people's lives, it preserved a lot of ours. A lot more good came of it than the damage," Melane added.

Melane believes if more people had seen their friends end up in body bags, they would not support Hiroshima's Mayor's call for the abolishment of nukes.

About 140,000 people were killed or died within months of the atom bomb being dropped.
