The frigid temperatures didn't stop these special athletes from hitting the track at Florida State University.

Runners of all athletic abilities warmed up quickly, hitting the pavement to support Special Olympics Leon County.

Donnie Jacobs is the County Coordinator and says, "It's priceless just to see the joy on their faces just to see them participate and to compete and it's fun for them".

These athletes are no stranger to life's obstacles, some are autistic or mentally challenged, but that's not stopping them from having a good time.

The event is putting smiles not only on these kids faces, but those who care so much about them.

"It was great I didn't even know she could run like that", said Linda Ray, mother of one participant.

The 5K run allows participants off all disabilities to compete with other athletes.

"I love to compete and I love to have fun", said Lea Shields, participant.

"The friendships she has gotten since she has gotten involved it's been really good for her, just the social part of it", said Ray.

One step at a time, these "special athletes" gain a boost of confidence and a medal of honor.

Organizers say the event raised almost $2,000, the money is used for competition and training in Leon County.

Many of the participants will be competing in the area games held at Godby High School on March 17th.
