The Center For Disease Control and Prevention says as of June 1, 2009, 25 million doses of the gardasil vaccine have been distributed in the U.S. Health officials say around seven percent of those vaccinated reported serious adverse and sometimes fatal reactions.

A teenager from Kansas was vaccinated because cervical cancer runs in her family. She says after her final dose of gardasil was injected, she collapsed and started having chest pains. Now, at 16 years old, she takes up to 15 medications on a daily basis for a potentially fatal disease, Lupus, which doctors say she contracted from the vaccine.

The CDC says other serious side effects that have been reported since gardasil was introduced involved hospitalization, permanent disability, life-threatening illness, and sometimes death, but they say not all serious events were caused by the vaccine itself.

The gardasil vaccine is used to help prevent 4 types of the human papilloma virus which is known to cause most cases of cervical cancer.

The CDC still continues to recommend the Gardasil vaccination for the prevention of 4 types of HPV.
