An employee of the Youth Development Campus in Pelham has been suspended after being accused of sexual misconduct with a student. The Youth Development Center in Pelham is a last resort to help children with criminal records or severe behavioral problems.
Tuesday morning, YDC officials resorted to the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office and the GBI to help them.
"The call was in reference to an alleged sexual assault of a juvenile at the facility there by an employee at the facility," said agent Ronnie Thompson, Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Investigators aren't releasing the alleged offender's position at the center or the nature of the assault, only that the victim was an underage female.
"Neighbors who live in this community across the street from the YDC say this isn't the first time they've heard of an incident like this occurring there. They say it's a place where children go to straighten out their lives but they often get led astray."
"For all the parents out there that do have children, we can't even feel safe with them locked up! That's supposed to be helping them, and they're juveniles. I think it's terrible," said neighbor Stargell Washington.
"Parents, you need to look into this because this isn't the first time! Next time, the child could be killed, you never know," said neighbor Makilya Williams.
Investigators say no arrests have been made at this time, but the accused employee has been suspended. Youth development campus officials declined interviews. They directed our news team to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Atlanta, where officials acknowledged the investigation but referred our team to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations.
