The Jackson County community will say its final good-byes to Mellie McDaniel and Deputy Mike Altman on Saturday. The two were gunned down in front of the sheriff's home on Tuesday.
The entire Jackson County Sheriff's Department will take the day off to attend the funerals, with Leon County Sheriff's deputies taking over, sworn in as Jackson County deputies for the day under a mutual aid agreement.
Leon County DEP Dustin Brock recently transferred from Jackson County. He said he's anticipating an emotional day as he fills in for his one time colleagues.
Brock said, "I think one of the best ways we can show our respects for somebody is working for them and being able to go over there and work as a sheriff's deputy like I did a couple of years ago, and be able to work the county for them while they're going to pay their respects for the people at the funeral. It means a lot to me."
Mellie McDaniel's funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 10 at Christian Center Church in Marianna. Her family will receive friends Friday night from six to eight at the church.
DEP Mike Altman's funeral will also be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Damascus Pentecostal Ministries Church in Freeport, Florida. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the church
