Getting to Know Gillum

Last year Andrew Gillum became the youngest city commissioner in the history of Tallahassee, but his interest in politics didn't start out so victorious.

The Gainesville native kept going, immersing himself in high school student government. Andrew then ended up at Florida A&M University. Even as a freshman he told himself he wasn't going to get involved in student politics, but then issues such as the One Florida Initiative.

After serving as SGA president, Gillum graduated from FAMU in 2003, and also took his seat with the city commission. Thursday, the 24-year-old stood before his FAMU family as the MLK convocation's keynote speaker.

The FAMU grad says Thursday's honor was in his words, huge, and when asked if Dr. King would have been proud, Gillum is a first generation college student and one of seven children.
