-- Tallahassee Florida -- April 10, 2012 --

CBS News legend Mike Wallace won 21 Emmy's. He was on television for more than 60 years. He was also the grandfather of WCTV's Eyewitness News Reporter Eames Yates.

6 years ago Yates sat down with him for a candid interview. WCTV broadcast it for the first time ever.

Yates asked Wallace if he felt the same as he did when he was 20 years old.

Wallace said " I used to have a very bad case of acne. As a result of which I grew up with kind of a chip on my shoulder and a sense of inferiority. And I think to a certain degree I tried to make up for that. Some of that good, I knew that I was going to have to work harder and pay perhaps more attention to my responsibilities. This is not an easy answer really. But that marked me."

Yates responded saying "so you're saying kind of a lack of confidence made you so good?"

Wallace said "a lack of confidence made me work harder."

Yates went on to ask "you've become very successful. What do you feel you've sacrificed to get here?"

He said "I was more interested in my work than in my family."

Eames said "in the sense of did you derive more happiness from work?"

Mike said "apparently I did yeah because I... I've been married 4 times. Those marriages, those divorces I should say were ah casualties of preoccupation with work and insufficient attention to family relationships."

Mike took to heart a reporter's pledge of comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. He will be missed.
