Austin Brinkley is a 7th grader at Shiver Elementary School in Grady County. He's the first student from Cairo to win this honor. He competed against students from Grady and Thomas Counties, and 10 North Florida counties.
Brinkley says, "It's really cool. It's been my dream to always go to the National Spelling Bee because I've always been good at spelling and I finally get to do it; so that's kind of cool."
Carol Laigh is an instructional coordinator for Shiver Elementary and she's taught Austin three years in a row.
Laigh says, "Austin's just an exceptional student. He's an excellent speller; he used to correct me many times because I'm not a very good speller. Austin's excellent."
The word that helped Austin win was "croquet." Now he's getting ready to spell his way to the top at the end of May in Washington DC, as he competes in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee.
