The House Policy and Budget Council heard testimony Friday on plans to roll back local millage rates in counties across the state.
Local governments are screaming that the cuts could dramatically affect public safety, road projects and other services needed by a growing population.
Rep. Joe Pickens (R) of Palatka, FL says, "There are no luxuries in Gadsden and Union and Dixie and Gilchrest counties. And to have their tax base, their ad valorem tax base cut by 40 percent overnight is something that I don’t think we should do."
Supporters say the measure will reduce property taxes by nearly 20 percent.
The council will take a vote on the bill next Friday.
