Florida Senate Votes to Replace Current Teacher Reward Program

The STAR program, short for Special Teachers Are Rewarded, ran into serious opposition from teachers who complained that it was not a fair way to reward the best instructors.

The Senate agreed Wednesday voting to replace that program with a new merit award program.

Sen. Don Gaetz, (R) Niceville, FL, said, "Does the teacher have an individualized way for that to happen? Those are observable, measurable methods and those methods now will be able to be used to reward teachers, not just the FCAT."

The new merit pay program will provide bonuses of anywhere from five to ten percent for the best teachers. The House will vote on it Wednesday.
