Local Businesses Team Up With Thomasville Schools

Thomas County school Supt. Larry Green says "austerity cuts" may have a damaging effect on districts throughout the state of Georgia this year, but this district has a little help on the side.

"Where the businesses have filled this void is by providing volunteers, additional resources and fill some of those voids we've been experiencing,” explains Supt. Green.

Through apprenticeship programs and job shadowing, businesses and institutions of higher education in Thomasville show younger students the importance of studying hard to achieve their goals.

"We need to start young, we need to start helping students see what our community has to offer, what jobs are available, and what they need to do to prepare for those jobs,” comments Michelle Collins, Director of Marketing at Southwest Georgia Technical College.

Wednesday morning, Thomas County educators awarded Commercial Bank with their Bee Partner of the Year award, a high honor for the work they do with youngsters at Cross Creek Elementary.

"We have about 21 employees that take a little over an hour three days each week and go and read to the students,” Janice Chason, Asst. VP of Commercial Bank explains.

School officials say in this time of need in Thomas County, it really will take a whole village to raise a child.

Business partners to the Thomas County system were recognized Wednesday morning at the superintendent's breakfast.
