A Massachusetts mother, who has nine children between the ages of 3 and 21, says her reproductive rights were violated after a hospital permanently sterilized her against her will, the Boston Herald reported.

Tessa Savicki is now suing Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., as well as three doctors and two nurses. In the lawsuit, the 35-year-old claims doctors were supposed to implant an intrauterine device, which is a long acting and reversible birth control method, after she delivered a son on Dec. 19, 2006.

But instead, Savicki said doctors performed a tubal ligation (also known as getting one’s “tubes tied,”) which is a permanent form of sterilization.

“There was no medical reason for them to do this,” Savicki told the Herald. “That’s my choice. This is my body. I wanted the IUD so later if I felt I wanted more children, I could have more.”

The hospital was served with the lawsuit on Dec. 15. A Baystate spokesperson declined to comment on the case, according to the report.
