Last year Suzette Rice started an employment agency.
This year she's getting help from the city to build her business.
The city of Valdosta has certified seven local small businesses through its Small Emerging Business Program, which could mean big money for small companies.
Rice said, "It's opened a lot of doors, pointed me in the right direction on things that I've needed to get accomplished, to be successful from the start."
"It allows small business to have a seat at the table in major bidding projects," said Valdosta mayor, John Fretti.
The program will help guide and instruct small business owners like Eugene Dale, on how they can be competitive in the local market.
Eugene has owned his electrical company for 28 years but hasn't moved out of "phase one" as he calls it.
The Small Emerging Business Program is helping him hammer out the details on the steps needed to compete for larger government contracts.
For entrepreneurs like Suzette, the program will teach her how to be the boss.
"It's time," said Rice. "It's time for me to step out on my own and do it for myself."
The VSEB program currently has a number of other businesses who are also in the process of being certified. VSEB certified businesses have access to a wealth of educational resources, the Access to Capital Program, a bonding assistance program, and will receive regular correspondence on local government bidding opportunities.
These tools will equip them to effectively compete for government contracts.

The first 7 certified businesses were honored at a January 28th ceremony.
