String of Burglaries

A string of south side burglaries has business owners up in arms and placing blame on local law enforcement.

Businesses in the southern triangle are repeatedly being broken into, and they say the Tallahassee Police Department and the Sheriff's Office are standing by and letting it happen.

Just like a thief in the night, crooks crack the fence wide open, crawl through and push Flora Williams out of business.

Flora Williams, Enchanted Garden business owner, says, "I have to close my business because I can't take anymore. I replace all the loss, I can't keep it up."

Since February, Enchanted Garden Antiques has been robbed four times. Just down the road, Edward Cornelius is digging deep into his pocket, also the victim of thieves. His business was burglarized three times in the last month.

Edward Cornelius says, "It makes me angry. I'm tired of being sick, now it's time to be angry and we intend to force the police to do their job!"

R&L Virgin owners took a nearly $20,000 hit when two trucks where stolen. Mechanic George Gaines lost roughly $1,400 in tools. Nearly 20 unsolved burglaries in four months in a four-block radius has some south side shop owners tempted to take the law into their own hands.

Edward says, "I'm thinking of that myself. When you don't have that much and people start taking it. I'm tempted to wait down here with a baseball bat."

These burglarized business owners believe the unsolved crimes are uninvestigated by law enforcement because they operate on the south side. The business owners also criticize the work of the Tallahassee Police Department. Flora Williams says one deputy told her to get used to the break-ins because of where her business is.

TPD says it takes allegations of not doing their job seriously and all crimes are vigorously investigated no matter where they occur.
