For most people, the idea of owning a home is enticing. However, for millions of Americans it's the down payment or bad credit that turns the dream of becoming a homeowner into a nightmare, but there could be some much needed help on both fronts.
Debbie Love of the Tallahassee Lender's Consortium says, "Tallahassee Lenders Consortium has been in business for over 10 years providing down payment assistance for first time home buyers. We're still amazed at how many people don't know we're out here."
The consortium may be the best keep secret, or there may be misconceptions about what they do and who can qualify for its help.
"We provide down payment assistance for both the county and the city, so anywhere in the Leon County area we administer the program, and that's for income eligible people. The eligibility is much higher than what people might assume," says Debbie.
D.J. Johnson of Leon County Housing Services adds, "They need to know that a first-time home buyer is just that, a first-time home buyer or someone who hasn't owned a home in three years."
The consortium wants people to understand this is not a public housing program. This is a way to get that American dream. The maximum loan someone could qualify for is $5,000. If you have any questions call the consortium at 222-6609.
