Fashion is cyclical. What's hot today may not be the "in thing" tomorrow, but most styles make their way back around eventually. According to Barbara Dyer, Ph.D., the chair of the textiles and consumer services department at Florida State University, retro styles are hot right now. She says, tops with sailor stripes have come in and out of style for hundreds of years, and once again, they're back.

Dr. Dyer says the one-piece jumpsuit, also known as a romper, which was popular in the 1930s and 1940s is back in style.

FSU associate professor and internship director Judy Miler, Ph.D. says fashion is making a major leap, however, away from jeans and t-shirts. She says it is moving toward more feminine and intricate styles like those that were popular in the 1800s, the 1940s and the 1980s.

The styles sweeping in for this season, at least, are capes, long flowing skirts and soft blouses. Dr. Miler says these items are very lady-like and Dr. Dyer says they have touches of lace, ruffles and bows to enhance the feminine flare.
